Quarter-Wave Portable for 40 Meters

On March 29, 2003 I worked California, Arizona and Iowa with a home-brew 1/4-wave vertical for 40 meters. SWR was 1.3:1 with only a single pruning of the vertical element.

New 40 meter vertical is a 33 foot wire held up with an MFJ fiberglass pole. I also used a 33-foot counterpoise wire spread behind the vehicle.

Closeup of antenna and base. The mast rests on a four-foot section of PVC pipe. The base is a drive-on mount for a 25-foot aluminum telescoping mast I have. You can also see the counterpoise wire.
